Injection of botulinum toxin into facial muscles are an effective method for getting rid of wrinkles. But Norwegian scientists used this drug to treat severe obesity – for this purpose it is injected into the lower part of the stomach.
Tens of millions of women around the world began to look much younger, thanks to the “beauty shots” – injections of purified botulinum toxin into specific muscles of the face. From a medical point of view, botulinum toxin products are not muscle, and piercing their skin. This substance, being a strong nerve poison that blocks the passage of nerve impulses, causing paralysis of the muscles of the face miraculously smoothed.
But scientists from the Norwegian Institute of science and technology (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) used the neurotoxic properties of botulinum toxin for the treatment of obesity.
In testing this method involved 20 people in the country suffering from very severe obesity (a measure of body mass index they had 35 kg/m2 and 44 kg/m2 at upper limit of normal 25 kg/m2).
Using a special instrument called an endoscope and is introduced into the stomach through the mouth and esophagus, the researchers injected botulinum toxin in the lower part of the stomach to all the participants 2 times for 1 year.
Weigh-in all participants before the study and 1 year later after it began, showed that 70% of participants botulinum toxin injections led to weight loss, and very noticeable weight loss averaged 17% of the original.
And yet 6 months later, after 3 injections of botulinum toxin, 75% of participants observed a decrease in weight on average by 28%.
The authors of this study believe that botulinum toxin blocked the passage of nerve impulses of hunger from the stomach to the satiety center located in the brain.
